There were plenty of fun prizes and goodies on offer including pampering items and chocolate. The dementia forum is a major commitment from Springhill Care Home, pledging to support not just our residents, but also their friends and families. The second of Springhill Care Home’s popular dementia forums has been held recently, with a very special guest. This was quickly remedied by Hannah, our lifestyle support co-ordinator whose aim is to have a concert every week of the year – so far we have achieved three out of four each month. Great Britain has a long and illustrious history of offering opportunities for learning across a range of skills.
A huge projector screen was set up and with tasty homemade popcorn on hand (it wouldn’t be a trip to the cinema without it!), residents settled down to enjoy classics from Laurel and Hardy and Morecambe and Wise. We also had time to make some regal crowns ahead of the Royal Tea Party we’re planning for Queen’s 90th birthday. Residents proudly sang the national anthem as they held flags aloft, before raising a glass of sherry to Her Majesty. A royal affair was held at Springhill Care Home to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday. Springhill Care Home is to host a colourful, treeptop garden party to raise awareness of dementia. The outside space is a wonderful facility when the sun is shining and the donation is most gratefully received.

Within a few days, a whole range of Easter chocolate niceties began to appear in the team leaders’ office and there is currently a whole farmyard of chocolate animals grazing within a paper picket fence. For many people who make Springhill their home, maintaining a high standard of personal appearance is paramount. This fantastic initiative is a national programme aimed at highlighting the great work being done in homes across the country. Certainly, the message is very clear at Springhill - with the resounding noise of singing by residents from both the Care Home and Care Centre as well as many relatives echoing around the building.
The announcement follows a number of activities we’ve already unveiled including offering healthy menu cards detailing easy and affordable recipes, and providing fresh fruit to encourage healthy eating. Staff will be able to set personal goals and to track them over time, and data collected will also help the care group understand how it can better support its employees. In the first week alone, Elaine made 178,000 steps, equivalent to almost 90 miles and averaging more than 17,000 steps per day as she went about her work supporting residents and helping with other domestic duties at the care home. As well as singing with a guitar, Chantelle also dedicated the first half of her session to lots of other unusual instruments and we all had a wonderful musical afternoon.

We’d all like to thank Curtis Bennett and Karen Fairclough for all their hard work organising the event and setting the fireworks off on the night. Christmas is a time of year when we love to get together at Springhill Care Home and take part in a festive activity. The team, Springhill Care Home’s Isma Hussain, Gemma Creech, Rachel Cougill, Alex Beard, Donna Barker, Tabussum Bashir and Ruslana Lazirko, have now completed the 15-month programme, giving them a City & Guilds Level 5 qualification. Local choir the Conchord Singers led our residents as they performed a special Christmas concert recently.

A member of the team has discovered a suitable bird cage which has now been donated to the home by its former owners, and is set to be transformed.
Each month Springhill Care Home in Accrington has a get together with the local community. We wanted to nominate Eddie and Cecilia because they play such an important part in the lives of many of our residents, who love spending time with the pair and continuing to celebrate their faith. Run by Beccy Cooper and based in nearby Clayton-le-Moors, Coopers Critters is a great organisation which provides educational animal encounters for establishments including schools, nurseries and care homes. The five mums-to-be are Paige Smith-Phelps, our activities team leader, and healthcare assistants Collette Mellor, Emily Birtwistle, Chelsea Spencer and Amy Hopwood. All residents and family members were invited, with fun and games, refreshment and cake on the agenda. During his visit, Springhill Group Chairman Ken Nolan and General Manager of Springhill Care Home, Curtis Bennett, took Graham on a tour of the home and its specialist care centre. Even though we’re in the month of October many of our residents enjoyed an ice cream recently whilst the weather was still warm, with our staff visiting everyone with a special ice cream trolley prepared for the occasion. Residents, relatives and staff joined in the fun as we shared sweets, cakes and refreshments.
This included inspired little touches such as partially obscured swimming goggles, gloves with corn kernels in the fingertips and headphones with discordant sounds playing. Among the support provided by Compassion Rwanda during the visit were special long-lasting shoes for children, a new toilet block and emergency equipment such as mosquito nets. Breast Cancer Now’s ‘wear it pink’ campaign saw thousands of people across the country donating money towards breast cancer research, in exchange for having pink themed fun. The choir was the first visit by a school singing group we are hosting this Christmas, with more planned, and they’re always a popular occasion for us. Staff including Springhill Care Group chairman Ken Nolan stopped by to join in the fun, and a visit from Father Christmas put smiles on faces. Adele was presented with her flowers by Springhill chairman Ken Nolan and managing director Donna Briggs, as she was thanked for her hard work over the years. Springhill Care Home is serving up regular support for the community on issues relating to dementia. To mark the incredible milestone, a special meal was held at Sparth House Hotel, where Kath was presented with beautiful bouquets of flowers, a bracelet and a delicious cake, featuring a mini icing replica of the lady herself.
